The Gen AI Study

Data Collection Complete

Overview

In Spring 2025, we collected comprehensive survey data on the use of generative AI and attitudes toward it from students and instructors at the beginning and end of over 50 courses around the world. We use this data to test several hypotheses about the usage of Gen AI both inside and outside the classroom. Specifically, we investigate whether instructors’ attitudes and use of Gen AI tools influence student adoption, or if increased student use alters faculty attitudes towards these tools. We also study the impact of institutional and classroom policies on student use of Gen AI tools, and the effect of course level and assessment type. Our results inform a variety of potential classroom interventions that effectively leverage Gen AI for teaching and learning economics.
